Doubling down on grit and authenticity, Mariel Buckley has planted her flag firmly as a songwriter who’s in it for the long haul. As one of Canada’s busiest touring acts, she makes no apologies for her wry perspective that has been charming listeners across North America. The polished glow of mainstream music holds no appeal for this emerging songwriter, despite her thoughtful arrangements and hook-friendly interpretations of the traditional singer-songwriter fare. “…we think Buckley’s velvet, buttery twang is just the smoulder mainstream needs.” - 51 North Magazine, 2021
After the release of her critically acclaimed sophomore album, Driving In The Dark (2018), Buckley saw a quick shift in momentum, and its steady incline has continued even throughout the strange turns of 2020. With no shortage of official showcase slots and festival/touring dates, her accolades continue to grow among industry and colleagues alike as a dynamic and engaging live musician.
While the pandemic saw the cancellation of support tours for William Prince, The Bros. Landreth and Del Barber, along with several of her own tour postponements - Buckley settled in for a heavy bout of songwriting to prepare. She leaves 2020/21 with two new releases, ‘No Surprise’ (Produced by Skinny Dyck); the 2-song EP, ‘97 Riverdale’ (Recorded with MB’s touring band); and most excitingly, a brand new LP, recorded with producer Marcus Paquin (The National, Sarah Harmer, The Barr Brothers.) While their styles may seem an unexpected pairing, Buckley has been eagerly consuming projects mixed and produced by Paquin for years. She felt a contemporary impression of her classic country and western sounds would be an innovative opportunity for growth.
‘Everywhere I Used To Be’ (2022) looks to turn country fans on their heads from track one. The songs feature heavy synth pads anchored by the familiar whine and ear-friendly arpeggios of the pedal steel. Backed by some of Canada’s finest session musicians, the result is a driving, swooning, toe-tapping catharsis; sealed and delivered by Mariel’s signature authenticity and brand of angst-ridden alt-folk/rock.
By respecting the tradition of crafted and genuine songwriting while pushing the proverbial sonic envelope, Buckley is poised to deliver on something fresh for Americana listeners and show-goers. With no commitment to the old-school country experts nor the neo-Nashville popstars, Mariel Buckley aims to find herself squarely on the fringes and exactly where she belongs: writing something raw and unique for the dreamers and the underdogs.
“
With her sun-washed, melodic Americana music, Calgary’s Mariel Buckley is poised to make her mark. There’s an inherent poignancy in the way she carries her smoky vocals across nostalgic arrangements and thought-provoking lyricism that makes her next album much anticipated.
